Simple Activities to do with Kids at Home

The need of the hour is to avoid crowds and stay at home for the sake of humanity. Let’s play our part and be responsible. This is not the time to feel isolated but a time to come together as a family.

When I got the news that school will be off for a few weeks, I was shocked and a little apprehensive (okay, a lot!). But to be honest, I’m enjoying this time with my kids. And my kids are just loving this time. I think they are secretly praying the condition drags out. Because we are having fun trying new activities to do at home.

Simple Activities to do with Kids at Home

I’m not a Pinterest mom. If you follow me, you know that. My focus has always been doing activities we love as a family. They don’t have to turn out amazing. The only condition is we should have fun doing them.

If you are having difficulting managing kids at home, try these activities:

Create a time table

The first thing you should be doing is, make a timetable along with your children. Let them put in their ideas as well. At the end of each day, design a timetable for the following day and try to spend the time accordingly. This will give your kids, an idea about the tasks that a family and home require; how to manage those tasks and save time for rest and leisure.

Arts and crafts

This is one of the activities that kids enjoy the most. They love creating new things. Just give them some leftover card boxes of cereals, toothpaste, soaps or whatever at hand, a box of paints or colors, scissors, tape and let them have fun. Don’t supervise them too much but do help when they ask for it.

Take out the Board games

Board games get really interesting when you play them as a family. There are many to start with; Monopoly, Scrabble, Battleship, Twister, Snakes & Ladder, Ludo or even UNO (though it’s a card game). And there are always puzzles if you want something less noisy. You laugh, discuss strategies, scream in delight at small victories, get defeated among your family and have fun as a family.

Reading

Reading is a calming exercise. Practice it every day. At our home, after-lunch hour is quiet time. I encourage my children to pick up a book during this time.

When your child sees you reading, they will find a book by themselves from the shelf to read. If they ask you to read to them, then do that. Encourage reading at home. If they find reading boring, then introduce them to something that they are already interested in.  Also, remember there is always an option of the digital library.

Act a Play

Read a small story, discuss its characters and then enact it at home. Make props and dress up like the characters in the story. We did an act at home and had quite a lot of fun. The story was based on the journey of vegetables discussing their life from the fields to be cooked for dinner. It was quite amusing and we learned; how much effort is put in to have food on your plate. Children discussed terms such as; wastage of food, healthy food and sharing of food.

House chores

Ask your kids to help around the house; cleaning, washing up the dishes or vacuuming, whichever is age-appropriate. Other than staying at home, it is also required of us to disinfect our houses every day using bleach or other disinfectants (you can look upon the internet for further details). Discuss Corona virus and ways of prevention at home to instill the importance of staying clean. Give a bottle to your kids and ask them to make a disinfectant spray and spray it on the surfaces of the things you touch.

Brain games

Try to find some interesting activities or printable and work with your kids. They may not be interested in strict work but they will surely enjoy little brain games if introduced appropriately. Like give them a big word like “refrigerator” and ask them to take out words using alphabets from that word, crosswords are interesting to play or ask them to write with their passive hand. There are many activities that can be done at home to keep the kids busy, one of them is baking or cooking as well. We as a family enjoy cooking together.
